Elba can be reached by car, boarding the ferry at Piombino Marittima, where 4 shipping companies (Toremar, Moby Lines, Blu Navy and Corsica Ferries) run an excellent ferry service with numerous daily crossings during the summer months.
The ferry takes just one hour to cover the 10 kilometres that separate the mainland from the island harbours of Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro and Rio Marina. The hydrofoil, for passengers only, takes just 20 minutes to cross from the mainland to Cavo, near Rio Marina, after which it continues for a further 15 minutes to Portoferraio.
